What is Coaching?
You hire a personal trainer when you need that boost, direction, and accountability to reach your physical fitness goals. Coaching is like having a personal trainer, but for the other areas of your life, such as self-improvement, wellness, work/life balance, and relationships.
Your coach is your strategic partner in personal development. A coach often helps you develop understanding and skills in areas that were not likely taught in school such as interpersonal skills, time management, self-confidence, how to determine and live by your values, how to develop healthy habits, how to create practical and actionable goals, and how to successfully navigate the changes life throws at you.
Coaching is a collaborative alliance between you, as the client, and your coach. It offers a safe, judgment-free environment for you to “zoom out” and take a deeper look at where you are headed so you can make intentional choices instead of mindless ones that may not actually serve you.
Also, coaching is focused on what is important and best for you, not what everyone else wants externally from you. Goals are client-led and mutually agreed upon with the coach drawing from his or her own specialized training and unique life experiences to help you gain clarity and insight into your situation and make progress in different areas of your life.
Coaching is tailored and time-limited so you may work with a coach for a period of time, say 3-6 months, with the ultimate goal of internalizing the new skills, insights, or changes gained so that you can sustainably maintain them on your own. Of course, you may return to coaching again if a new topic arises to address in the future.
Coaching, as defined by the International Coaching Federation, is: partnering in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires individuals to maximize their personal and professional potential (ICF).
